Mechanisms of Metabolic Disease

Course Description:

The course presents an overview of the role of nutrition in both pathogenesis and treatment of chronic disease.  We will focus on six units (Allergy, Obesity, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Gastrointestinal Disorders and Cancer) going through molecular pathogenesis of disease, clinical manifestations of disease, and journal club discussions on current research for each. The course will also discuss the intersections of these metabolic diseases clinically and in research. The course will conclude with an integration of this material and novel research approaches.

Course Goals and Objectives:

1. Understand the pathophysiology of the highly prevalent metabolic diseases (allergy, obesity, diabetes, CVD, GI disorders, and cancer) 
2. Understand the link between these various chronic diseases 
3. Understand treatment modalities of these chronic diseases 
4. Understand the current research in the field of interest  
5. Review current literature and give suggestions for further discovery
