Columbia Cornell Obesity Medicine FAQs
What changes are made to the course material annually?
Our course material is updated annually to reflect:
-
The latest research and clinical findings in obesity medicine
-
Learner feedback
-
Guidance from the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM)
The overall course structure remains consistent year to year unless significant updates are warranted.
What is the difference between live and on-demand courses?
Live courses take place in real time and offer opportunities to engage directly with faculty through Q&A sessions. Participants must claim CME credit within 30 days of the course end date. Course materials—including video recordings and downloadable PDFs—are available for review, with online video access provided for 36 months after the course concludes for continued study.
On-demand courses are pre-recorded and can be accessed at any time, allowing participants to complete the material at their own pace. CME credit can be claimed upon completion of the course, and access remains open for 36 months from the time of purchase.
When are live courses scheduled?
Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment is typically offered each year in March or May, with both in-person participation at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center Campus and virtual live remote access options available.
The 2026 Review for the Obesity Medicine Certification Exam will take place the day before Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment, with both live and live-remote participation options offered.
When can I register for live courses?
Registraton for our live courses typically opens in November or December each year.
Will combining the LIVE Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment Course and the ON-DEMAND Additional Topics for Advanced Study Course fulfill the CME requirement for the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) exam?
Yes. Completing these two courses will provide you with over 60 ABOM-designated Group One CME credits, meeting the CME requirement to apply for the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) certification exam.
Do participants of the LIVE Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment course receive a discount for the ON-DEMAND Additional Topics course?
Yes. Participants of the LIVE Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment course will receive an email with a discount code for the On-Demand Additional Topics for Advanced Study course.
Please note, this course is updated annually, and the timing of discount notifications may vary.

What is the difference between the on-demand two-course and three-course packages?
The two-course package includes:
-
Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment
-
Obesity: Additional Topics for Advanced Study
The three-course package includes everything in the two-course package plus:
-
Review for the Obesity Certification Exam
Both packages meet the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) requirement of at least 60 CME hours in obesity medicine and count as ABOM Group One credits.
Is the two-course or three-course package right for me?
Both packages satisfy the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) requirement of at least 60 CME hours in obesity medicine and count as ABOM Group One credits.
Not sure when you plan to take the board exam?
We recommend the two-course package and suggest enrolling in the Review for the Obesity Certification Exam course in the same year you intend to sit for the exam.
Note: For past Columbia Cornell Obesity Medicine (CCOM) participants, pricing for the review course is the same whether purchased individually or through the three-course package.
If you prefer having everything up front or need flexibility in your study schedule, the three-course package may be the better option.
When do the courses expire?
On-demand courses expire two years after their release date. Specific release and expiration dates are listed on each course webpage. Participants must complete the course and claim CME credit before the expiration date.
For live courses, CME credit must be claimed within 30 days of the course end date.
How long do I have access to course materials?
Participants have access to course materials for 36 months after the course expiration date. To maintain access, you must complete the course and claim CME credit by the stated expiration date.
May I download course material?
Lecture PDFs are available for download. However, video lectures must be viewed on our course platform and cannot be downloaded.
