Andrew Batuure, MS ’23: From Preclinical Research to Human Nutrition

Andrew Batuure, MS ’23, came to Columbia University’s Institute of Human Nutrition (IHN) with a background in preclinical research and a growing interest in the clinical aspects of health. At IHN, he studied nutrition’s role in healthcare and applied that learning to research he continued after graduation.

From Walter Reed to IHN

A Baltimore native, Batuure studied physiology and neurobiology at the University of Maryland before spending several years in preclinical research at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. During the pandemic, he decided to pursue further education and broaden his understanding of clinical health.

His decision led him to Columbia’s MS in Human Nutrition, bringing his earlier research experience into a new area of study.

Continuing research at Columbia

In October 2022, Batuure joined the Korem Lab for his master’s thesis project. In April 2024, he was a research associate in the lab at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Prospective students interested in combining nutrition coursework with research can explore IHN’s thesis research opportunities in basic science, clinical nutrition and public health nutrition.
