Meet Louis Formica - Integrating Nutrition and Dentistry

Louis Formica

Director of Faculty Practice and Assistant Professor of Dentistry

Louis Formica, DDS, MS ’10, has built a career focused on improving health through dentistry while emphasizing the important role nutrition plays in overall wellness. Today, he serves as Director of Faculty Practice and Assistant Professor of Dentistry, combining patient care with academic leadership.

Originally from Kinnelon, New Jersey, Louis began his academic journey studying Economics at New York University before pursuing his dental degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. His interest in the broader determinants of health ultimately led him to Columbia University’s Institute of Human Nutrition (IHN), where he completed his Master of Science in Human Nutrition in 2010.

At IHN, Louis deepened his understanding of how nutrition influences systemic health, an insight that has shaped his approach to dentistry. Oral health is closely connected to overall health, and Louis integrates nutritional principles into his clinical practice and teaching to help patients maintain healthier lives.

For Louis, dentistry is more than treating teeth—it is about improving quality of life. As he puts it, “I love what I do – I create smiles and keep people healthy. Whether we are talking about coffee stain, tooth erosion, or managing the effects of diabetes, each of these conversations begins with the foundation the Institute of Human Nutrition has provided me.”

What brought you to your profession?

"In many ways Institute of Human Nutrition (IHN) brought me to my profession.  Through my thesis project, I collaborated with leaders in the fields of dentistry and behavioral health to launch a project rooted in nutrition.
