Overview
Dr. Michael Owen-Michaane is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Institute of Human Nutrition and the Division of Preventive Medicine and Nutrition at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he also serves as the Assistant Director of Medical Nutrition. Dr. Owen-Michaane is a specialist in prescribing and managing parenteral nutrition for patients with complex digestive disorders and malnutrition, both in hospital and home settings. His areas of expertise include malnutrition, obesity, micronutrient deficiencies, sarcopenia, and cachexia.
Dr. Owen-Michaane earned his MD from the University of Kentucky and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center. He furthered his education with an NIH-funded research fellowship and earned a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and as a Physician Nutrition Specialist, in addition to being a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician.
Dr. Owen-Michaane serves as the Co-Director of the full-day Advancing Nutrition in Medical Practice educational course for physicians at the annual American College of Physicians conference in 2025.
In addition to his research and clinical duties, Dr. Owen-Michaane is an active member of several national committees within the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, including the Physician Engagement Committee and Parenteral Nutrition Committee.

Research
Dr. Owen-Michaane research focuses on developing novel tools using data science and blood biomarkers to improve the measurement of muscle mass and enhance the diagnosis and treatment of malnutrition and sarcopenia. He is also deeply involved in research aimed at reducing complications of parenteral nutrition, including central line-associated bloodstream infections
